Georgia’s annual summer open burn ban begins on Wednesday.

54 counties are in the burn ban area, including Floyd, Bartow, Chattooga, Gordon and Polk Counties.

The burning of yard and land-clearing debris is prohibited until September 30.

Ozone is formed when volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides react in the presence of sunlight.

A major source of these pollutants is the burning of fuels and other combustible materials.

Those pollutants can cause chronic heart diseases, and inflammations of the lungs, especially for children and people with asthma.

The summer burn ban, which runs until September 30, is in addition to the rule against burning household garbage, which is never legal in Georgia.
