We continue to see low COVID-19 positivity rates in Northwest Georgia, but public health officials are keeping a close eye on a new variant of the virus.

According to Dr. Gary Voccio, health director for the Georgia Department of Public Health Northwest District, the BA 2 variant is currently circulating in Europe, particularly the United Kingdom.

Also, on the health front, we have had one case of whooping cough reported in Northwest Georgia.

Dr. Voccio said pertussis is a very contagious bacteria.

Dr. Voccio said pertussis is treated with antibiotics, but the best way to protect yourself and your children is by getting a vaccine.
