On Thursday afternoon the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office held a ribbon-cutting event for their new Mental Health Unit in their medical division.

Floyd County Sheriff, Dave Roberson, spoke at the event and said that they hope to be able to use the Mental Health Unit as soon as Monday the 14th.

Sheriff Roberson also explained that originally the unit was supposed to open in 2021 around June or July, but the plans were delayed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and certain supplies being on backorder.

As part of the mental health unit, a new medical contract at the jail has also started on March 1st with Genesis Health Alliance.

Bonnie Moore of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) also spoke at the event.

The funds that were needed to renovate this new unit at the jail were obtained in a voter-approved SPLOST project in 2017.
