STAFF REPORTS

Donations are now being accepted for this year’s Thanksgiving Day Love Fest at the Rome Civic Center.

Since 1988, the event has been feeding anyone who needs a good meal on Thanksgiving Day.

Organizer Rev Terrell Shields says the need has grown since the first Love Feast, and this year, with increasing food prices, the challenge is even greater.

“The costliest part is the paper good, the plates, the utensils you eat with, and the turkeys,” he said.  “I think last year they were maybe 69 or 79 cents a pound.  So, with 80, 20-pound turkeys, you are looking at a lot of money.”

A big supporter of the Love Feast over the years was Rev. Warren Jones, who would often celebrate his Birthday on Thanksgiving Day at the civic center.

Rev. Jones passed away in May, and his daughter, Jan Ferguson, asked for donations in his memory.

“A lot of people have asked me what they can do for me, and what they can do in memory of dad,” she said.  “My answer is, give to the Thanksgiving Day Love Feast.  It’s such a worthy cause.  It was near and dear to dad’s heart, and I want to give dad an amazing 100th Birthday at the civic center.”
