Rome Police warn public of rise in catalytic converters theft

August 26th, 2021 – 2:55 PM

Rome Police Department –

According to the Rome Police Department, The Rome/Floyd area has seen a rise in the theft of catalytic converters from vehicles.

The reason is the value of the metals used in the manufacturing of the catalytic converters…they contain platinum, rhodium, and palladium (These metals are expensive, and thieves know it).

They attempt to sell the converters to scrap yards, or buying/selling apps for several hundred dollars per piece, depending on the size of the converter and the current rate on the metals inside it.

Thieves look for easy targets when it comes to catalytic converter theft, and a few steps can help make your car or SUV a less likely target.

Rome Police recommend the following things you can do to protect your vehicle:

  • Install an anti-theft device
  • Use Motion-Activated Lights
  • Parking in well-lit areas
  • Parking in a garage
