STAFF REPORTS

The new City of Rome Landmarks Committee recently met and voted unanimously to move a statue of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest to the Rome Area History Center.

The statue that used to stand at Myrtle Hill Cemetery was moved earlier this year.

Forrest was a Confederate Army General but was also a prominent figure in the foundation of the Ku Klux Klan.

It will be up to a new interpretation committee to come up with the wording to go on a plaque for the statue, telling the whole story.

Before that happens, the city commission will need to fill a vacancy on the committee to replace Jim Belzer who recently passed away.
