Rome City Commission meets Monday

May 23, 2021–1:21 p.m.

STAFF REPORTS

The Rome City Commission will conduct a public hearing Monday night regarding a proposed 36-unit apartment building in the Five Points area.

The rezoning for several properties on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Gibbons Street comes to the full city commission with a recommendation to deny from the Rome-Floyd Planning Commission.

Developers say the apartment building would go a long way to address Rome’s need for more housing.

However, planning staff expressed concerns that the development alters the character of the Five Points area and is of inappropriate size and scale.

A number of nearby residents also spoke in opposition to the development during the planning commission meeting.

Another agenda item for Monday night’s meeting is the Barron Stadium Operation and Maintenance Agreement.

The agreement was tabled during the last commission meeting as some commissioners wanted more information.

The Rome City Commission is also expected to consider a license suspension for the Calhoun EZ Stop on Calhoun Avenue.

The business was one of two cited on March 10 for selling alcohol to an underage person during a compliance check conducted by Rome City police and the Alcohol and Tobacco Division of the Georgia Department of Revenue.

After a representative of the store failed to show for hearings before the ACC twice, it was recommended that their license be suspended.

If the city commission agrees, the establishment may appear before the ACC on June 21 to explain why they failed to show up for the hearings and to request their license be reinstated.

In other actions, the commission is expected to discuss a parking ordinance amendment to clarify and modernize the language pertaining to parking violations.

You can read the amendment HERE.

Monday night’s city commission meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Rome City Hall.
