NEWS RELEASE

Four Rome High School students have been selected to move on to the semifinals in this year’s Governor’s Honors Program competition.

Katelyn Clark (Mathematics), Shriya Garg (Mathematics), Griffin Girard (Chemistry), and Catherine Mendes (Theatre Performance)are the four talented students selected to move on to the next step in this rigorous process.

During a normal school year, interviews would take place at Berry College with college professors and other professionals who will work with the students eventually named as winners of the Governor’s Honors Program. However, all semifinalists’ interviews (except Percussion, Piano, Visual Arts, and Theatre) will be conducted virtually on February 27. The remaining program interviews will be held onsite at Berry College on March 6.

The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school students who will be rising juniors and seniors during the program. Winners will attend a conference where they work with other students in their area of study and learn from adults who are working in the field.

Rome High School’s Governor’s Honors Program Coordinator, Melody Burse, was beyond excited to announce the semifinalists for the program. “It is a strenuous process, but our students are incredible. This is such an honor for them to be recognized by the GHP,” said Burse.

Burse explained Governor’s Honors as a rigorous program. “The instruction is completely different from a regular high school classroom. Classes are designed to provide students with various academic, cultural and social enrichment. The classes and activities are also designed to develop our next generation of global leaders, critical thinkers, and innovators. It is quite different, but students truly enjoy it,” said Burse.

Finalists and alternates will be notified on March 26.
