Update on South Meadows residential development

The Rome Redevelopment Committee got an update on the South Meadows residential development.

The project is being funded with tax credits through the Georgia Department of Community Affairs’ Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program, which also helped to fund Etowah Terrace and Burrell Square.

The site is located off Pollock Street near the former Curtis meat packing plant.

Laurel Street Residential plans an 80-unit apartment complex with 80 one to three-bedroom units with rents ranging from just under $400 to $675 a month.

Bobby Jones, interim director of the South Rome Redevelop agency said there will also be a community building with programming.

“We will be doing a healthy eating program in conjunction with the Davies Shelters farm,” he said.  “It is the same property as the Davies Shelters South Meadows farm, so the Davies Shelter will be providing some programming around healthy living as well as helping to start and manage a community garden.”

Jones said there may also be an opportunity for more housing in the area in the future.

“When they put in water, sewer, roads, and the parking lot, I think we are going to end up with up to 12 single-family lots,” Jones added.  “They will be added on right next to the apartments and we will hopefully be able to develop them for CHIP houses.”

CHIP stands for the Community Housing Improvement Program.
