STAFF REPORTS
More affordable housing is being developed in the South Rome area.
Earlier this week, the Rome City Commission approved a rezoning request for 15 acres at the end of Pollack Street.
Laurel Street Residential will construct two-story, four-unit buildings and two-story, eight-unit buildings on the property, along with a community building and plenty of green space.
“As you know, the South Rome Redevelopment Corporation has already built a number of affordable single-family homes down there in the area,” said Brice Wood with the Rome-Floyd Planning Department. “I would say they are most likely or definitely the best example of affordable housing quality in Rome and Floyd County. This project is adjacent to the levee system and they also have plans for a community garden down there on the other side, I believe.”
Lee Cochran, Senior Vice-President for Development with Laurel Street said he is looking forward to continuing their partnership with the South Rome Redevelopment Corporation.
“As many of you know, we finished up a development a couple of years ago,” he said. “Burrell Square, Etowah Bend, and McCall Place, three locations one project. We’ve been looking for another opportunity to work in Rome and with the South Rome Redevelopment Corporation. So, we were thrilled when we were able to work with them on this potential new project.”
Cochran added they are able to provide quality mixed-income workforce housing with a design that respects the area with smaller four and eight-unit buildings, two stories, and below.
