NEWS RELEASE
Dave Roberson has qualified to run as a Republican in the race to succeed Tim Burkhalter as Floyd County sheriff.
“I’m running for sheriff for three reasons,” said Roberson. “I love this community. I want to help make Floyd County better and safer for all who live here. And I care deeply about the hard-working men and women at the Sheriff’s Office.
“I’ve been humbled by the incredible amount of support I’ve received during this unusually long campaign season, and I couldn’t be more excited about the road to the Republican Primary on May 19,” he continued. “I’ve spent the last 21 months talking to citizens, colleagues, leaders, and neighbors. Listening to feedback and concerns. And working hard to develop a plan that will make this place better. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to talk with me about the issues that are important to them.”
If elected, Roberson will focus on a four-part plan.
“As the pressures and demands on law enforcement evolve, we must continually strive to do more to support our communities and reach out to the citizens,” he said. “Should I have the honor of being elected, I will focus on four critical areas that will make Floyd County a safer community for all, while ensuring that taxpayer dollars are stewarded most effectively so that we can make needed progress. I refer to these as the 4 Rs: Relationships, Recidivism, Recruitment and Retention of Employees, and Revenue.”
Roberson has devoted his entire career to serving the people of Floyd County through his work at the Sheriff’s Office. During his 25 years of continuous service, he has held supervisory roles in each of the agency’s four divisions. He was division commander for field operations before beginning a leave of absence in January to focus on his campaign.
“As a leader, I am about the people,” he said. “I build relationships. And I lead by example – from within. This has prepared me well. But one of the things that sets me apart is the fact that I spend my days out in our community. This has prepared me even better. As division commander for field operations, I was on the road every day. I know the issues we are facing because I would see them firsthand. I feel that being in tune with our community is critical for whoever is elected sheriff.”
Roberson holds a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Shorter University and is a graduate of Leadership Rome and the Focused on Floyd 101 Employee Academy. He is passionate about serving his community and is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Noon Optimist Club, Exchange Club, the Harbor House Board of Directors, the Living Proof Recovery Next Door Advisory Board and the Sexual Assault Center of NWGA Board of Directors. He also enjoys running races that support local charities and volunteering with youth-focused programs.
Public service is a legacy for the Roberson family. Dave’s father, Lonzo, retired as deputy chief of the Rome Police Department after 40 years, and his brother, Brad, is chief of operations for the Rome-Floyd County Fire Department. Dave’s wife, Thometrice, is a lieutenant with the Sheriff’s Office Reserves.
“I come from a family of public servants and truly consider the people at the Sheriff’s Office to be part of my family as well,” he said. “I want to protect them, treat them with respect, and make sure we are always doing what’s right and best for all the citizens of Floyd County.”
The funds for Roberson’s qualifying fee were donated by his brother, Brad, in memory of their father.
“Before he passed away in 2018, our father told Dave how much he wished he would be here to pay his qualifying fee and see this campaign through,” said Brad. “It’s an honor to be able to do this in my dad’s memory. He was very proud of Dave, as is our entire family. We know that Dave will lead the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office with pride and integrity. Most of all, he will take care of his deputies, the citizens, and other public safety members.”
