Mount Vernon Mills has announced that they’re closing their yarn and weaving mill in Alto, Georgia.

Randy Henderson, Vice-President of Mount Vernon Mills in Trion – informed media outlets last Friday those two Alto plants would be closing effective March 9th; however they would continue running full operations in Trion.

The closing of the Alto Mills reportedly has some Mount Vernon employees and businesses nervous.  A number of contractors that work with Mount Vernon Mills in Trion were allegedly told to “go home” last week – and rumors have spread like wildfire in regard to what changes may be coming to the operation in Trion.

Henderson did address the recent rumor that Carhartt was buying out Mount Vernon Mills.  Stating simply “Carhartt is not buying us.”

Mount Vernon Mills is the largest employer in Chattooga County – providing jobs to around 1700 people.  The mill is responsible for about 80% of the taxes paid to the Town of Trion.
