A number of free screenings will be available this Saturday during the 21st annual Health Initiative for Men and Women.
The event, sponsored by the 100 Black Men of Rome and Northwest Georgia is from 8 a.m. until noon at the Floyd County Health Department.
“It has a lot of working components,” said Alvin Jackson with the 100 Black Men of Rome and Northwest Georgia. “You get free screenings and we give away groceries. Every year we find someone affected by prostate cancer. As you know, everything we do is free. If you cannot follow up with those tests, then we have a way of connecting with the medical community to get you the help that you need. So, we encourage everybody to come out. We serve anywhere from 300 to 600 people at this health fair every year.”
According to Jackson, the health fair is a money saver, a time saver, and in some cases, a lifesaver.
“Normally what I do when I go through and get all these tests done, I take the results to my regular physician, so I can sit down and go over the results with him,” he said. “That saves me money, it saves me time, and I think the health fair is a blessing to the community.”
There will also be mammograms for women, who are asked to make an appointment by calling (706) 509-6840 and selecting “option 1.”
