-Staff reports-
The Floyd County Board of Elections will meet on Tuesday and will hold a final public comment session and vote on the proposed change to the Garden Lakes precinct boundary.
According to elections officials, the proposal scheduled for consideration affects approximately 15 active voters residing on a specific segment of Melody Lane.
The limited adjustment is being proposed to protect ballot secrecy, not to broadly change the Garden Lakes precinct.
All impacted voters have already been directly notified by mail, receiving both an explanation of the proposed change and details regarding the public hearing and vote.
The segment of Melody Lane currently represents a unique ballot combination that exists nowhere else within the Garden Lakes precinct.
If left unchanged, publicly available election results could be cross-referenced with voter records in a way that would allow individual vote choices to be inferred, an unacceptable risk to voter privacy.
Relocating this small portion of the street to the Alto Park precinct prevents that risk while maintaining transparency in election reporting.
The alternative would require suppressing portions of publicly reported results, which the Department does not believe serves the public interest or the principles of transparent elections.
Tuesday’s meeting will start at 6 p.m. at the Floyd County Election Center located at 18 East 12th Street.
The caucus will begin at 5:45 p.m.
