Isaiah Spurgeon has been named the Rome Police Department’s Officer of the Year.
According to Assistant Rome Police Chief Rodney Bailey, in December, he responded to a house fire on Pennington Avenue, where a wheelchair-bound woman and two children were inside and unable to get out.
“Without any regard for his own safety, he immediately went inside the house and hit the kids out,” Bailey said. “He then went back in the house and got the wheelchair-bound lady out.”
Spurgeon was named Officer of the Quarter and was also honored with the Lifesaving Award for his actions that day.
Spurgeon had previously been named Officer of the Quarter following an incident in September where a woman was bleeding profusely in the restroom at Walmart.
According to Rome City Commissioner Harry Brock, Spurgeon went in and applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.
“He remained with the subject, providing reassurance and emotional support until EMS arrived, and determined she had suffered an internal venous ulcer, was on blood thinners, and had lost over a liter of blood,” Brock said. “Medical professionals confirmed that Officer Spurgeon’s quick thinking and immediate intervention were critical in stabilizing her condition and preventing a potentially fatal outcome.”
Officer Spurgeon was honored during Monday’s Rome City Commission meeting.
