It has always been known locally as the Claremont House, but to fans of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, it’s the Creel House.
The historic structure at East Second Avenue and East Tenth Street has become a tourist destination for people like Jemuel Maghirang and his daughter, who are from California.
“My daughter is a big fan, and we planned a trip to Orlando, and then thought since Georgia is close by, why not visit the areas featured in Stranger Things,” he said. “We are going to do some other visits, but this was our first stop because it’s the furthest away from the airport. We drove an hour and thirty minutes to see this place, and then we are off to the next stop.”
According to Kristi Kent with the Georgia’s Rome Office of Tourism, there were around 5,100 visits to the Creel House in the last year.
“I would say about 35 percent of those visits have happened in the last month, maybe even closer to 40 percent,” she said. “What’s amazing is that they spend over an hour there because they have other fans that are there visiting, and they sit there and chat about the show, and all things Stranger Things.”
The house has gained popularity without any real promotion as a tourist destination.
“We were kind of restricted from talking about the show until the final episode came out,” Kent said. “We’re not allowed to talk about it because we may reveal something [spoilers] because there was filming going on in Rome, as everybody knows, and it was such an integral part of the storyline.”
For those planning to visit the site, please remember, it is private property. Visitors are welcome to admire it from the public sidewalk only.
To give you an idea of the fame the “Creel House” has attained, a Lego version has been released. You can own your own smaller copy of the home for $299.
