The schedule for Rome and Floyd County’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration has been released.
The weekend of events will begin on Friday, January 16, at 6:30 p.m. with a youth talent show at the Rome City Auditorium.
“That’s where we bring our kids together to showcase their talent and sort of get them involved,” said Alvin Jackson with the local King Commission. “Then on Saturday morning we will have our annual Prayer Breakfast at the Lovejoy Baptist Church. . It starts at 9 a.m. Tickets are $20, and that’s the only thing we have to charge for. We have Dr. Dennis Drummond, who will be the speaker at that event. It is also geared toward our youth because we will have the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Choir, who will be performing.”
The Ecumenical Service will be on Sunday, January 18 at 5 p.m. at the North Broad Baptist Church.
“The keynote speaker for that is Bishop Thomas Brown Sr., who is from Atlanta,” Jackson said. “I think he was ordained in Tennessee back in 2003. He is a great speaker, I understand. He is a member of the Concerned Black Clergy out of Atlanta, and is involved in a number of other things around the nation.”
The Freedom March will be on Monday, January 19.
Participants will begin assembling at First Avenue and Broad Street at 11 a.m., and the march will start at 11:30.
It will conclude with a noon program at the Rome City Auditorium.
