Law enforcement agencies are gearing up for a busy holiday travel period.
New Year’s is always an active time, according to Casey Forrister with the Floyd County Police Department.
“We do get a little active around this time of year,” he said. “New Year’s Eve is coming up, and it is one of the ‘drinking holidays,’ I guess you could say, and it affects what we do and how we concentrate our efforts. Last year, there were 10 DUI arrests just here in Floyd County, and I’m sure there were a lot more statewide.”
Officers are trained to spot motorists who are driving under the influence.
“We go through pretty vigorous training,” Forrister said. “Standardized field sobriety would be the first one, and then, of course, we have advanced roadside. It goes even further than that. We have people who are considered DREs, which is the highest level. I’m not one of them, but we have three DREs in Floyd County, and they are considered experts in that particular field. So, we have that available, and they are going to be out working New Year’s Eve. I’m sure they are going to be very busy that day.”
There are plenty of rideshare services available, so there is really no excuse to be drinking and driving.
“We have Uber, and we have Lift,” Forrister added. “There are also several taxi services here in Floyd County, and if it’s just one of those things where you just have to get somewhere, I’m sure there is somebody you can call. My mother would have hated to get woken up by me when I was 21 years old, but she would have probably come and gotten me. Looking into it, 15 percent of our DUI crashes in Floyd County in 2023 resulted in a fatality.”
The 102-hour New Year’s holiday travel period runs from Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. through Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
