Members of Rome’s water and sewer committee got an update on utility work related to the Second Avenue widening project. According to Assistant Division Director John Boyd, the scope of the water main project includes about 3,000 feet of 8-inch and 12-inch pipes with two critical connections to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center. The sewer project includes 188 feet of 8-inch main that will serve Safe Lock and Key.
The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded a $26.2 million project to C.W. Matthews Contracting Company for the Second Avenue widening. Since utilities are now liable for any additional costs incurred if they cause any delays for a project, the city uses the DOT contractor for their work whenever it is possible.
“That little bit of water I described will take six months and will take about $761,000 to do it,” he said. “The sewer was included in the project but the numbers were pretty astronomical. Like I said, 188 feet of sewer line and a couple of manholes, and it was over $100,000. So, we chose to pull that and we are going to be doing that with in-house staff.”
