The Rome City Commission has awarded a bid for the Jackson Hill Trail Connection.
Four bids were submitted, with S.H. Creel Contracting meeting the requirements of a “responsive, responsible” bidder at $974,903.
“That was a 2023 SPLOST project—the City of Rome sponsored that,” said Rome Transportation and Trails Planner Julie Smith. “It’s a $2 million project. Part of that is rehabbing the duck pond. So, if you can envision, you are at Jackson Hill, kind of in the Civic Center parking lot down by the labyrinth; you will be able to walk around the old duck pond. Then you essentially go under Riverside Parkway, and you will come out in the Burwell Creek trailhead by the Chick-fil-A container store.”
The connection will also provide a link to the trail system for North Rome residents, and more.
“It’s a big deal, because Jackson Hill invites hikers and mountain bikers,” Smith added. “If you want to ride your mountain bike over and go to the pump track at Ridgeferry, or ride downtown, or ride north, it just provides those connection opportunities.”
According to Smith, the hope is to have the trail connection completed by the end of the year.
