Plans are underway for the annual Thanksgiving Day Love Feast.
The first Love Feast, 28 years ago, fed around 900 people, and it has continued to grow since then, according to Rev. Terrell Shields, pastor of the Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church and co-chair of the Love Feast.
“This year is a little different because times are hard and people are desperate,” he said. “People are in a dire need, not only around the world, but right here in Rome and Floyd County. We have many, many people who will not have dinner on Thanksgiving Day. There are those who will have to decide whether to have dinner on Thanksgiving Day or meals the rest of the week, or lights and gas.”
Rev. Shields spoke during Monday’s Rome City Commission meeting, and he thanked the city for their past support and asked for continued support, especially in this challenging year.
“38 years ago, the late Buddy Mitchell, and the late Napoleon Fielder, along with Mr. John Bennett, who was the city manager, gave us the opportunity to start a dinner for those who are less fortunate,” he said. “The late Mr. Buddy Mitchell made it possible that we might continue to use the civic center. Thank you for carrying on his wishes. In about 30 of those 38 years, Mr. Bill Collins has made it his personal business to be there to help serve. Mr. Collins has also always made it possible for us to have a check to help buy the goods.”
The Love Feast is seeking volunteers and donations.
