A new soccer field has opened at the Rome-Floyd YMCA as a joint effort between Atrium Health and The Atlanta United Community Fund.
This partnership comes as a result of the Atlanta United Community Fund’s “Georgia 100” program. This program seeks to open 100 small soccer fields ahead of the 2026 World Cup being hosted in Atlanta this summer. This new field at the YMCA marks field 20 out of 100.
Dan Bevels, President of the Atrium Health Floyd-Polk Foundation, spoke to Doug Walker in the WRGA news studio this morning about the project.
“We met with our board and just got unanimous support for it,” said Dan.
This field marks one of three that have been completed in the area for this program. One is already built at the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Center and another is already built at Hogue Avenue Park. But the project continues as three more are planned. One in Garden Lakes Park, one at the Goodyear Civics Center in Cedartown, and another in Summerville.
The Atlanta United Community Fund started this initiative with the goal of making soccer more accessible in Georgia communities.
Dan explained this morning, “The other part of the goal is that they would try to [build small soccer fields] in communities that didn’t have ready access to soccer in particular.”
