The Rome Police Department is investigating an incident on Tuesday in which a person was struck by a train.
According to Rome Police:
At around 1:40 p.m., officers with the Rome Police Department responded to the area of East 2nd Avenue SW near the railroad tracks in reference to a pedestrian being struck by a train.
Upon arrival, officers located a deceased adult female on Norfolk Southern property under the Turner McCall Bridge on the south side of the tracks. The incident did not occur at the railroad crossing.
Preliminary investigation indicates the train engineer observed the individual walking on the tracks, sounded the horn, and applied emergency brakes in an attempt to prevent a collision. Despite those efforts, the individual was struck.
The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
According to Floyd County Coroner Gene Proctor:
The deceased is a female, and her body is being sent to the GBI Crime Lab.
