A Pittsburgh pediatrician is dead, and his wife is hospitalized after a home invasion stabbing attack in their Edgewood, Pennsylvania home, according to authorities.
Allegheny County police have arrested 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway, of Pittsburgh. He has a rap sheet in the county courthouse going back to 2016, with his most recent prior arrest coming in July in connection with a burglary that took place in February, according to court records.
He was released without bail on that charge.

On Thursday, authorities brought seven new charges against him in connection with the attack — including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and trespassing.
Hemingway is accused of breaking into the victim’s home on Linden Avenue around 12:30 a.m., although he allegedly told police that he had been invited inside by Dr. Evans without being able to provide any information about how they’d met. Police found blood on a windowsill and exterior door in the family’s kitchen.

Evans’ wife, whose name has not been released by police, was hospitalized with stab wounds. According to the affidavit, she escaped the attack and fled to the home of a neighbor, who called 911 at around 12:31 a.m. Thursday. Police arrived in about 3 minutes.
She later told police that Hemingway appeared “psychotic” and claimed to be “God” — while attacking the couple in his underwear. She told police that her husband appeared to address the attacker by name, but she said she’d never seen him before.
The victims were rushed to the hospital as police launched a manhunt for their attacker. Dr. Evans was pronounced dead in the hospital at 1:42 a.m.
A Monroeville Police K-9 named Channy found Hemingway, wearing nothing but underwear, two doors down from the crime scene.
According to the affidavit, he had cuts on his hands consistent with committing a stabbing attack. Hemingway allegedly told police that he had been invited into the home by Dr. Evans — and also claimed that the doctor stabbed him in the back first.
According to court documents, Hemingway “did not have a stab wound on his back” and had no injuries aside from cuts on his hands.

Dr. Idris Evans, 46, was pronounced dead at the hospital. His wife was listed in stable condition.
Evans was the medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, according to his university profile.

Evans’ wife told investigators that they awoke to a man attacking them in bed with a kitchen knife, according to court documents obtained by KDKA. She said the attacker was wearing only underwear and uttered something about “being God,” the outlet reported. She also told investigators that Evans called the attacker “Elijah,” as though he knew him.
