-News Release-
Rome High School senior Isha Garg has been named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist.
Garg is one of more than 16,000 semifinalists from across the country selected for the 72nd National Merit Scholarship Program.
“Isha’s selection as a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist is an outstanding accomplishment and one that reflects the hard work and dedication she has shown throughout her time at Rome High School,” Rome High School Principal Dr. Christy Epps said. “We are extremely proud of Isha and look forward to seeing all that she will accomplish in the future.”
The National Merit recognition adds to a growing list of academic accomplishments for Garg.
Garg participated in the Governor’s Honors Program with a concentration in Biology this summer. She is also an AP Scholar with Distinction, an honor awarded to students who earn an average score of at least 3.5 on all Advanced Placement exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more exams.
She was honored last fall by Rome High School with a High 5 Medal after she earned a score of 5 on at least one AP exam.
Garg has paired her academic success with leadership and involvement throughout Rome High School. She serves as vice president of the National Honor Society, student body treasurer and co-president of the Georgia Students Against Destructive Driving Student Leadership Council. She is also captain of the varsity tennis team and plays No. 1 singles for the Wolves.
More than 1.2 million juniors from approximately 20,000 high schools entered the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as the initial screen of program entrants.
The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
More than 15,000 semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level, with finalists notified in February. Approximately half of the finalists will ultimately earn a National Merit Scholarship and the Merit Scholar title.
National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April and continuing through July 2027.
