The GBI has been called in to investigate the death of a Polk County Jail inmate.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office:
44-year-old Andrea Sevcech had been housed at the Polk County Jail for approximately two days.
She had been placed under medical observation upon her arrival due to apparent indicators of withdrawal.
The inmate had been arrested on a charge of possession of methamphetamine and had been medically cleared for admission to the Polk County Jail by Polk Medical Center.
Early Wednesday morning, while staff were assisting with a shower, they noticed that something was wrong as she became unresponsive after sitting in a chair.
Jail staff immediately contacted 911 and began life-saving measures, including CPR, use of an AED, and administration of Narcan.
Upon arrival, EMS personnel took over life-saving efforts and transported Sevcech to a local hospital, where she died.
