The Second Avenue widening project has been at a standstill for several weeks due to a number of unforeseen delays, but work could start back up in about a month and a half.
On Monday, representatives from the Georgia Department of Transportation updated the Rome City Commission and the community on the status of the project, which initially had a completion date of October of this year.
It is currently 328 calendar days behind schedule.
“We ran into sewer mains that were in a location that maybe weren’t shown correctly on the plans,” said Jordan Clement, GDOT District Construction Manager. “We’ve had storm drains that were tied in that we didn’t know were there. There was a large force sewer main that, actually, when we got to the side that is closed now, we realized that it was going to be in the roadbed. So, the city moved it for us, and then as we got over to the sheet pile wall, we realized that it was in conflict. So, we had to redesign the sheet pile wall and the levee that the design was adequate, and make sure that everything was approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.”

Grant Waldrop, GDOT District Engineer, gives an update on the Second Avenue widening project on Monday.
“The main reason why nobody has been working is because of the issues with the drainage, and any water lines that are discovered, as we are going along, have to be redesigned, so that we have proper flow,” said Joel Dillingham, GDOT District 6 Area 4 Manager. “Until that is done, the contractor cannot work.”
The redesign is underway and is expected to be completed in about a month and a half.
Then work can begin again, with an estimated completion date of September 2027.
