Woman charged with child abandonment, child cruelty
A Rome woman has been jailed on two counts of 1st-degree cruelty to children and three counts of child abandonment.
According to an arrest warrant and Floyd County Jail records:
27-year-old Sherry Kathy Thomas failed to pick up her children from a local elementary school at the end of the school day on March 20.
School officials and law enforcement tried contacting Thomas by phone several times.
She also informed the father that she refused to pick up the children, telling the father that it was not her problem and that he needed to figure it out.
Man accused of fighting with deputies
Two deputies sustained minor injuries during a scuffle with an inmate at the Floyd County Jail on Monday of this week.
According to jail records:
33-year-old Michael Keith Williams acted in a violent manner by yelling obscenities and threats toward the officers.
He resisted and began to fight the deputies as they were applying handcuffs
Willingham is charged with unlawful acts of violence in a penal institution and felony obstruction.
Warrant: Man tried to smuggle tobacco into prison
A 48-year-old Smyrna man is accused of attempting to bring contraband into the Floyd County Prison on March 24.
According to an arrest warrant:
Ted Mitchell Willingham was out on a work detail at the Walker Mountain Landfill when he left the designated work area and returned with eight one-pound bags of tobacco.
Willingham is charged with possession of items prohibited for inmates.
