As the fire marshal continues to investigate the cause of a fire that devastated the Historic Floyd County Courthouse on Monday, we are learning more about the firefighting efforts.
The initial call came in at 2:12 p.m.
Rome-Floyd County Fire Department Chief of Operations Clete Bonney was first on the scene, and the fire was already raging in the attic.
Bonney said there was real concern about the fire spreading to nearby buildings on Broad Street.
Firefighters were at the scene throughout the night and early morning on Tuesday, using drones to detect hot spots.
The offices and functions of the Tax Commissioner, Tax Assessor, and Tag Office were located in the Historic Floyd County Courthouse.
They will move to a temporary location at the joint law enforcement center, hopefully as soon as Wednesday.
The county is awaiting structural engineers to determine if the area around the old courthouse is safe before opening it.
Built in 1892, the Historic Floyd County Courthouse was undergoing renovations, funded by special purpose, location option sales tax, and American Rescue Plan funds.
Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord said it’s too early to determine if the building can be historic building can be saved or will have to be demolished, although he did admit saving it would appear to be a tall order.
