Authorities have arrested a 64-year-old former senior leader at Advocates for Children on 31 criminal charges.
Scott Alan Sherwin of Rome now sits in the Bartow County Detention Center. Authorities arrested him at his home on Thursday, March 5th, and Bartow County deputies booked him locally on Friday afternoon at approximately 2:30 p.m. He remains in custody pretrial.
Prosecutor Andrew R. Chandler swore out the warrants on March 5th in Magistrate Court. They accuse Sherwin of sexually extorting a male victim identified only as GS and forging community service records while working at the Advocates for Children center on Douglas Street in Cartersville.
Court documents state that Sherwin demanded regular photographs — including nude photos — from the victim. In exchange, he promised to log the victim’s required community service hours at the center. The warrants allege that, out of 80 sentenced hours, Sherwin logged 78 fictitious ones and submitted the false records to Supervision Services Inc.
He faces 15 counts of sexual extortion, 15 counts of first-degree forgery, and one count of false statements and writings. The alleged acts took place on multiple dates from April through August 2023 at the Cartersville location.
Advocates for Children says it learned of the investigation on February 26th. The nonprofit immediately terminated Sherwin, its Senior Director of Operations, revoked all his access, and began fully cooperating with authorities. The group stresses that Sherwin never harmed any child in its care and describes the violations as administrative in nature. The organization did not respond to requests for additional comment on the specific allegations in the warrants. It directed all questions about the case to the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation remains active. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to contact the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office.
