Although it has been open for a couple of weeks, the new Georgia Department of Driver’s Services building was officially dedicated earlier this week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The 4,057-square-foot building is located on Highway 27 North just behind the old 1,500-square-foot DDS building, which has been torn down.
“A big thank you to our prison, public works staff, and engineering staff,” said Floyd County Manager Jamie McCord. “I am also going to say one more time, thanks, Commissioner [Scotty] Hancock, who would not let this project die, and I’m glad he didn’t. We had a great turnout. We were told it was the largest turnout for a ribbon-cutting ever. Also, we are leading the state in wait times, at two and a half minutes, which is phenomenal for that operation.”
Officials broke ground on the project in July 2024.
The cost of the new facility is around 3 million dollars, all funded by the state.
Floyd County donated the property back in the 1960s.
