The Rome City Commission has voted to appropriate $10,000 in opioid settlement funds for a new program aimed at reducing Rome Transit Department bus fares for those most in need.
The Ride Forward Rome program will provide deeply discounted or no-cost passes to organizations that serve low-income and vulnerable populations, job training participants, veterans, public housing residents, GED students, and homeless shelter residents.
“The job training, the veterans, all the low-income, and everybody who needs assistance to get to where they need to go is a great idea,” said Rome City Commissioner Elaina Beeman. “So, I support this 110 percent.”
The $10,000 will fund program passes to help individuals get to meetings, appointments, treatment, and resources.
The Community Foundation is the proposed fiscal agent and will help secure ongoing funding and manage donors.
