The Rome City Commission has approved a memorandum of understanding with the Northwest Georgia Housing Authority for the Garrard Park project located at the former GE site in West Rome.
The park will consist of a publicly-owned and maintained community recreational park having two inclusive playgrounds serving ages 2–5 and ages 5–12, a covered pavilion with an attached restroom facility and picnic tables, a pedal park/pump track, internal walking connections, and access to existing trail systems.
“Let’s make sure that anybody crossing those roads has a crosswalk and a flashing light,” said Rome City Commissioner Elaina Beeman. “Slow those cars down and find a way that everybody has an opportunity to take advantage of this park that we have created in West Rome.”
The estimated cost is $1,733,680, consisting of $1,573,680 in grant funds and $160,000 cash match or cash contribution provided by the City of Rome.
The city will also be responsible for the construction, while the housing authority will be responsible for submitting reimbursement requests to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
