The Rome Police Department has received a Certificate of Advanced Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
According to Rome Police Chief Denise Downer McKinney, the department has been nationally accredited by CALEA since 1985.
“So, that means that all of us have grown up with accreditation,” she said. “That is a good thing for us, because it is the groundwork of best practices, of showing due diligence and transparency for the citizens we serve. It is commendable that we get this, but it’s an honor that not every department gets, but we work hard.”
The chief specifically praised the Rome Police Department’s accreditation manager.
“You have to have a special love for it,” she said. “He has to eat and breathe all of our policies, and there are about 461 standards that we have to adhere to and prove to the CALEA Commission that we follow, and we do it graciously. So, I want to thank you for allowing us to serve, protect, and look after everyone in the city limits of Rome.”
The Rome City Commission honored the police department for the accreditation milestone during their Monday night meeting.
