The Rome-Floyd County Planning Commission is expected to vote on an ordinance governing new convenience stores and gas stations when they meet on Thursday.
The draft ordinance, which can be viewed here, is a response to a proliferation of convenience stores in the city and county.
“We’ve put a moratorium in place, and that will go until April 1,” said Rome-Floyd County Planning Director Brice Wood. We’ve been looking at putting some additional restrictions in place. Some things, like greater distance requirements between stores. We are looking at greater distances from churches, schools, parks—you name it, and keeping them out on the major arterial roads. Gas stations rely on cars—that is their chief customer. We want them to go where the cars are, where they can be successful.”
Other agenda items include a special use permit that will allow for the installation of a new truck scale at an industrial/recycling facility on Woods Road, a special use permit for an outdoor gun range on Morton Bend Road, and a special use permit for a day care/group home at 3770 Kingston Highway.
The planning commission will also consider a rezoning request on Wayside Road. The applicant wants a zoning change from Suburban-Residential to Multi-Family Residential in order to build 420 townhouses and apartments.
Another rezoning for 225 Huffaker Road is being sought for the construction of twenty 1,800 square foot townhouses.
A rezoning request for a new pharmacy at 4334 Martha Berry Highway is also on the agenda, along with a zoning change from Suburban-Residential to Community-Commercial on Rockmart Road at Rockmart Highway will also go before the planning commission. The owner wants to rezone in order to market the property.
