It’s expected to be cold on New Year’s morning, and that’s kind of perfect weather for the annual Cave Spring Polar Plunge.
Activities will begin at 10:30 at Rolater Park with the plunge at noon.
The event has been going on for well over a decade.
“The late Mike Ragland came up with the idea, and I told him he was crazy when he said it,” said Billy Wayne Abernathy with the Cave Spring Historical Society. “But Mike Ragland helped start it and get it established, and we have kept it going over the years.”
The cost to jump into the pool is $30.
“People with the historical society and the city help get the food,” Abernathy said. “We’ll have baked ham, collards, and black-eyed peas. Also, if you do the plunge, you get a t-shirt and a free meal. All the money goes to the historical society to help with the upkeep of the buildings in the park.”
Abernathy said that a lot of people may not know, but many times, the water temperature is actually warmer than the air temperature, especially on really cold days.
