General Electric officials say demolition work is planned for portions of the company’s Rome facility beginning in early 2026.
According to a letter from GE Rome Facility Manager Cody C. Platt, P.E., Building 2 and portions of Building 3 at the site are considered obsolete and no longer practical to maintain. The demolition will remove approximately 400,000 square feet of former manufacturing space.
GE has retained Sabre Demolition to carry out the work. The company has completed similar demolition projects for GE facilities nationwide over the past 25 years. Sabre is expected to submit a commercial demolition permit application to the Rome-Floyd County Inspections Department in the near future.
Initial phases of the project are scheduled to begin in January 2026 and will take place indoors, making the work largely unnoticeable to the public. Structural demolition of the buildings is expected to begin in spring 2026.

Ronald Reagan is shown touring the General Electric plant in Rome, Georgia, during his tenure as host of “General Electric Theater” in the 1950s, when he regularly visited GE facilities across the country.
Platt stated that the demolition will not have off-site impacts. Work will be conducted during typical daytime hours, Monday through Saturday, and is not expected to disturb nearby properties or residences.
Despite the removal of the structures, GE officials say the company will maintain its presence in Rome. Environmental treatment systems will continue operating, and staffing levels at the facility will remain unchanged.
GE officials say they will address any concerns from residents if they arise during the demolition process.
