The Rome City Commission has approved a rezoning request for the construction of apartments and townhomes on Match Point Way near the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.
The zoning change is from Community-Commercial to Multifamily-Residential.
The motion that was approved removed one staff recommendation that there be a fence, but the commission added a condition that a second permanent access point to the property be added.
Based upon the site plan provided, the proposed development would add approximately 300 dwelling units.
Commissioners, by a split vote, approved a request to remove a previous condition placed on a rezoning for a residential development at Dodd Boulevard and Highway 411.
The property has already been rezoned to M-R, which allows for the 210-unit townhouse development; however, a condition was placed on the approval by the city commission, preventing a point of egress along Dodd Boulevard.
The applicant presented a letter from the fire marshal, citing the potential for delays in getting people out of the subdivision if an evacuation were needed.
The vote to approve was 6-2, with Commissioners Elaina Beeman and Jamie Doss voting against.
Also Monday, the commission voted to deny an annexation request for 203 Burnett Ferry Road, which is currently the location of a convenience store
The commission approved a special use permit for a duplex on Ross Street, but voted to deny, without prejudice, a special use permit for a duplex on Gordon Avenue.
Special use permits for duplexes on Branham Avenue and Hardy Avenue were denied, without prejudice, after the applicant indicated that he wanted to withdraw the applications.
Commissioners approved a rezoning on Addington Drive, where the applicant wanted to construct single-family homes, and a rezoning on East Eighth Street so the applicant can build a deck at the back door of the existing dentist office.
