Starting this Tuesday morning, the Floyd County Police Department will be in its new home in the former Glenwood Primary School off Old Dalton Road.
“At 8 o’clock, we will be open for business there for the public to come in should they need a copy of a report, or to speak to somebody,” said Captain Ron Hunton with the Floyd County Police Department.
As part of the negotiations in 2022 regarding the distribution of local sales taxes, an agreement was reached to convert the joint law enforcement center downtown into additional courtroom space.
“Not only were we running out of space, but certainly judicial was running out of space,” Hunton said. “The county found a creative way to solve the problem. From the get-go, this has been a collaborative effort within the county as far as different agencies. I think this will work out well for us, as well as for judicial. Moving forward, I think it’s going to give everybody that breathing space that they need.”
In May of 2023, the Floyd County Board of Education transferred the property to the county, which saved a lot of money in construction.
“A lot of the construction, as far as new construction, has been inside,” Hunton added. Taking a classroom and turning it into office space, new walls, new HVAC, renovating bathrooms, and creating new locker rooms, things like that. All the serious construction has been internal.”
The official address for the new headquarters is 1 Police Plaza.
