If you have walked the trails around the Robert F. Redden Footbridge, you may have noticed that work is underway on a 2013 special purpose, local option sales tax project.
Unity Point is at the confluence of where the Etowah and Oostanaula Rivers form the Coosa River.
Steven Bontekoe with Limestone RC&D was a guest on Tuesday’s First News with Doug Walker on WRGA and he spoke about the work that is going on.
On the Oostanaula River side of the bridge, there by Moe’s BBQ and the parking area, you’ll see we’ve made some good progress,” he said. “That’s going to be a drop-off spot for kayaks and canoes, and being able to access the river there. If you have a chance to go and walk across the bridge, you will also see that we’ve made good progress on getting some retaining walls built.”
He described what Unity Point will look like once it is completed.
“As you come under the trestle, there will be a paver sidewalk that will go out to the point,” Bontekoe said. “We’ve got a little retaining wall that we are building there right now, which will support an ADA accessible paver platform where you will be able to come and look out over the river. Then, if you were to turn around and look back at the point, there is another retaining wall that you will see there, that is kind of a circle shape. That will have a nice, stamped concrete observation platform on it. We’re also doing some upgrades to the city infrastructure.”
Bontekoe is hopeful the project can be completed in July. However, weather and other factors can always have an effect on the completion date.
