Authorities have released the names of three people who died in a multi-vehicle crash on I-75 between Calhoun and Adaursville Tuesday morning.

68-year-old Manuel Mijango of McDonough, 50-year-old William West of Lafayette, and 23-year-old Christopher Powell of Okeechobee, Florida, died in the wreck that involved three tractor-trailers and three passenger vehicles.

Two others were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

According to the Georgia State Patrol,:

A tractor-trailer traveling northbound struck a Hyundai Sonata. While no injuries were reported in the initial collision, the aftermath escalated quickly.

GSP reports stated that the Sonata left the roadway to the right, while the tractor-trailer crossed the median and entered the southbound lanes. Once in oncoming traffic, the truck collided with two additional tractor-trailers, a Toyota Corolla, and a Ford Ranger. The Ranger caught fire as a result of the impact.

The accident closed down I-75 South as the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) investigated the circumstances surrounding the crash.

At this time, it remains unclear what caused the initial collision in the northbound lanes.
