A new hazardous materials ordinance is set for a second reading a vote during Monday’s Rome City Commission meeting.
The ordinance comes with a recommendation to approve from the city’s public safety committee and mirrors an ordinance that was adopted by the county.
“The essence of what this will do is that it will allow our fire department to recoup the cost of services and materials should they have a large response,” said Rome City Manager Sammy Rich. “An example would be if you’ve got a big industrial fire where it consumes a lot of hazardous supplies, it would at least allow us to have those replaced.”

Monday’s Rome City Commission meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Rome City Hall.
The caucus begins at 5 p.m.
Also Monday, a number of zoning actions will be placed on a first reading, including a change from Light Industrial to Community Commercial for 196 North Avenue, and a rezoning from Duplex Residential to High Density Traditional Residential on Nixon Avenue.
A special use permit for a duplex at 35 Heard Street and an annexation request for 115 East Boundary Street are also slated for a first reading.
A vote will follow public hearings scheduled for the commission’s May 27 meeting.
