A new hazardous materials ordinance was placed on first reading during Monday’s Rome City Commission meeting.
The ordinance comes with a recommendation to approve from the city’s public safety committee and mirrors an ordinance that was adopted by the county.
“The essence of what this will do is that it will allow our fire department to recoup the cost of services and materials should they have a large response,” said Rome City Manager Sammy Rich. “An example would be if you’ve got a big industrial fire where it consumes a lot of hazardous supplies, it would at least allow us to have those replaced.”
Second reading and a vote on the ordinance will come during the city commission’s May 12 meeting.
