The Georgia House of Representatives has passed a couple of bills related to speed detection cameras in School Zones.
There are currently two operational cameras in the Rome High School Zone on Veterans Memorial Highway and the Main Elementary School Zone on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
This spring, another will be operational in the West Central School Zone on Lavender Drive.
Floyd County has a camera in the Armuchee Primary School Zone on Highway 27 North; another is being considered for the Armuchee Elementary School Zone on Highway 140.
House Bill 225, which is co-sponsored by State Representative Eddie Lumsden of Armuchee, would prohibit local governments or law enforcement agencies from using automated traffic enforcement safety devices altogether.
House Bill 651 would allow the devices but sets forth signage requirements, times of enforcement, and how the money from fines would be spent.
State Representatives Katie Dempsey of Rome, Matt Barton of Calhoun, and Lumsden voted in favor of both bills, which now head to the State Senate.
