The Carrollton Police Department recently released the following statement regarding a multi-store shoplifting spree that involved a Lindale man and a Calhoun man:

“On January 15, 2025, at approximately 5:00 PM, officers responded to a call from Target’s Asset Protection team regarding a group of males involved in a shoplifting spree. The individuals, known repeat offenders at multiple Target locations, were reported to be actively selecting items inside the store, while one remained outside in a vehicle.

Upon arrival, officers located and detained Daren McFarland (40) of Calhoun, GA, who was waiting in the vehicle. Inside the store, officers encountered Gerald Griffin (55) of Lindale, GA, who fled on foot but was quickly apprehended. Jacob Smith (27) of Dalton, GA, was also located inside the store and detained without incident. Both Griffin and Smith were found in possession of tools commonly used to manipulate anti-theft devices.

During the investigation, officers interviewed the suspects who admitted to visiting nine locations throughout Carrollton earlier that day. Items discovered in their vehicle were identified as stolen from these locations.

In total, $2,358.32 worth of stolen merchandise was recovered. The stolen items have since been returned to their respective stores.

Further investigation revealed that Jacob Smith had active warrants out of Floyd County for similar offenses, while Gerald Griffin had active warrants out of Bartow County. Two of the suspects were also out on bond for prior related charges.

All three suspects are currently being held at the Carroll County Jail.

The Carrollton Police Department remains committed to preventing theft and protecting businesses in our community. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of collaboration between local businesses and law enforcement to combat crime effectively.”
