Work continues on the Second Avenue improvement project, which the Georgia Department of Transportation reports is 21 percent complete.
The entire project has an estimated completion date of September 26, 2026. Once finished, two lanes will run in each direction separated by a median that allows for turn lanes into the Atrium Health Floyd campus and Heritage Park. Traffic from downtown will be directed to Martha Berry Boulevard or to turn lanes for Turner McCall or Shorter Avenue. There will also be two left turn lanes going toward West Rome. The split in the road at the intersection has been eliminated.
Another major GDOT project is the bridge at Big Dry Creek and the Oostanaula River at Berry College.
Traffic shifted to the southbound lanes in June and the northbound lanes of the existing bridge have been removed. The project is 36 percent complete and the estimated completion date is March 31, 2026.
Other project updates:
- State Route 140 from Highway 53 to Oothkalooga Creek in Bartow County – 97 percent complete. Traffic shifted to the newly constructed westbound lane at Wall 2 across from Old Highway 140, and existing lanes are being removed and reconstructed in the area. The estimated completion date is May 31, 2025
- Bridge replacement on Highway 293 at Dykes Creek – 32 percent complete. The subcontractor is constructing a temporary detour bridge for traffic shift before the existing bridge is demolished. Estimated completion date of December 31, 2025
