April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and both the Rome City and Floyd County Commissions have read proclamations recognizing the need to call attention to the issue in the community.

Kimberly King with the Sexual Assault Center of Northwest Georgia was on hand to accept the proclamation during Monday’s city commission meeting.

“I cannot begin to tell you how thankful we are a community that not only supports but invests in the resources that are needed to respond to these types of victimization,” King said. “We all wish for a world that was completely changed, without evil, and all of the darkness, but unfortunately we live in this world as it is. So, I thank God, literally. I thank our community and everyone for their support in ensuring that our services are always available, always free and always wide-reaching for the communities that we serve.”

The Sexual Assault Center of Northwest Georgia also provides services in Bartow, Polk, Chattooga, and Gordon Counties.

“Every day is an opportunity for change,” King added. “So I do encourage you to understand that you can invest in any type of way. Whether that’s adding something else to a conversation that supports a survivor, or just even mentioning that the sexual assault center exists, or anything like that.”

The Sexual Assault Center of Northwest Georgia and Harbor House – Northwest Georgia Child Advocacy Center will host the Walk to Support Survivors on Friday, April 26.
