Rome woman dies from injuries sustained in Saturday wreck

A woman who was critically injured in a two-vehicle wreck Saturday on Highway 27 South has died from her injuries.

According to Rome Police:

The preliminary investigation indicates that a northbound GMC Yukon, driven by 37-year-old George W. Fowler of Rome, was turning left onto Walker Mountain Road and was struck by a southbound Dodge Ram, driven by 21-year-old William D. Frier of Centre, Alabama.

A passenger in the Yukon, 59-year-old Denise Howell, was transported to Atrium Health Floyd. She later succumbed to her injuries.

59-year-old Joe Howell, and 61-year-old Jim Howell, who were also passengers in the Yukon, and Fowler were also transported to the hospital.

The driver of the Ram was not injured.

The Rome Police Department Accident Investigation Team is actively investigating and will release further information upon completion of the investigation.

The crash occurred just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
