The Rome City Commission will consider a resolution and a contract with the Rome City Schools for the issuance of no more than $120 million in bonds to fund the construction of a new Rome Middle School when it meets Monday.
The total estimated building cost of a new school on Three Rivers Drive, across Veterans Memorial Highway from the existing one, is $119 million. That figure does not include school equipment and other costs. To fund it there is approximately $16 million coming from state capital outlay funds on top of a voter-approved education special purpose local option sales tax
The school system’s plan to pay for the middle school relies on the passage of potentially three more education SPLOST measures. If future education SPLOST referendums don’t pass, it could lead to a property tax increase for city residents.

Also on the agenda for Monday’s city commission meeting is the approval of water litigation settlements with DuPont and Chemours. This is part of a suit the City of Rome filed against multiple carpet manufacturers are chemical companies to recoup the cost of treating PFAS in the water supply.
Proclamations for Constitution Week and Rebecca Blaylock Day are also on the agenda. In addition, several have signed up to speak regarding the extension of sewer service to the Chulio Hills neighborhood.
The commission meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Rome City Hall. The pre-meeting caucus starts at 5 p.m. in the Sam King Room.
