The family of a New York firefighter who died in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be special guests during Rome and Floyd County 9-11 Remembrance Service.
Nicholas Chiofalo died along with five other members of his company from Brooklyn’s Engine 235 in the World Trade Center attack.
“Nicky” was last seen entering the South Tower to help evacuate people trapped inside.
His entire engine company, except for the driver, was lost.
No remains were ever recovered.
“Nicky was a firehouse cook, a prankster, and a dedicated family man who had just ended a 24-hour shift when he called his wife to say he was needed in Manhattan, and he would call when he could and that he loved her. That was the last time his family heard from him.
In addition to working for the New York City Fire Department, Nicholas served as the Fire Chief in Selden, New York and he was also a pyrotechnics engineer for “Fireworks by Grucci” in New York City.
Chiafolo’s sister and niece are expected to present the memorial wreath during the local ceremony and other family members may also be present.
The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. on Monday at the Rome/Floyd Firefighters Memorial Plaza at Rome City Hall.
